Geography
At Freeman’s Endowed CE Junior Academy, our Geography curriculum is designed to provoke and provide answers to questions about physical and human aspects of the world, developing the children’s knowledge of their local area from KS1, to the UK, Europe and beyond. We believe that our Geography teaching should instil a love of Geography in all our children and develop an understanding of concepts, knowledge and skills. We seek to inspire a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people, which will remain with our children for the rest of their lives.
Through high quality teaching, our curriculum will develop the children’s interest and understanding of diverse places. We will study and compare the human and physical geography of cities, counties, regions and countries across the world, through the use of visual stimuli, and a variety of scaled maps and online maps, such as google earth. Topics such as Rivers, Mountains, Earthquakes and Volcanoes will develop an understanding of how our earth was formed, whilst challenging the children’s thinking of the impact on the humans around these areas. Children will become competent in the use of 6 figure grid references and the 8 compass directions. Lessons will encourage children to read and interpret data, then compare and present information to demonstrate a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.
We aim to develop the following essential characteristics of geographers:
- An excellent knowledge of where places are and what they are like, both in Britain and the wider world
- A comprehensive understanding of the ways in which places are interdependent and interconnected
- An extensive base of geographical knowledge and vocabulary
- Fluency in complex, geographical enquiry and the ability to apply questioning skills, as well as effective presentation techniques
- The ability to reach clear conclusions and explain their findings
- Excellent fieldwork skills as well as other geographical aptitudes and techniques
- The ability to express well-balanced opinions, rooted in very good knowledge and understanding about current issues in society and the environment
- A genuine interest in the subject and a real sense of curiosity about the world and the people who live here.
The curriculum is designed to develop knowledge and skills that are progressive, as well as transferable, throughout their time at Freeman’s and also to their further education and beyond.
